Pandemic don’t Panic be Prepared!

http://youtu.be/KpiCdZ2BbPw

This is not a video, but a public health announcement. Why? Because, I am sick and did not take heed. And I hope my words might help others

According to (WHO) World Health Organizations we are in a global pandemic as of March 11, 2020.  As of today: dead 4,400 and over 120,000 infected, 1,000 in the USA. It took Tom & Rita Hanks positive virus status and the NBA to social distance to wake up America up. According to Dr. Fauci (NIH), “the worst is yet to come.”

This is about mitigation currently; mitigation is key at this juncture. This country has a little over 100,000 hospital beds and most of all those beds are already being occupied by chronically ill individuals.

If we do not mitigate at this time, this is what will happen: people will not get the care they need, due to the fact, we do not have enough readily available ICU beds. Our medical providers will be inundated with ill people without space to provide proper care. Our medical providers will become burned out and overworked and will be on the front lines of becoming infected with the virus. Our medical providers are at a point where surgical and medical supplies are running low.

Please do not ask your elderly relatives, friends or neighbors to watch your children at this time, your children could possibly be super spreaders of the virus. Stop shaking hands, wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds, try to be mindful of not touching your face, and use hand sanitizer. Wipe down flat surfaces with a bleach product. Use a tissue or cloth too touch structures while public spaces. Cough into your elbow. Do not go to large gatherings: for example, church, concerts, movies, travel, or parties. If you are sick, please stay home so you do not infect others. And please, stay off cruise ships.

Did we (USA) act to late, yes, yes we did? Covid-19 became worldwide news on January 23, 2020 with the assistance of 8 brave Chinese health care providers going against Chinese norms to warn the world.

China’s very aggressive social isolation of millions of its citizens help mitigate Covid-19 in their country.  It has been six weeks and the virus has peaked. Did they act too late? Yes, they did. Because, now as you see we have a global pandemic. Am I blaming China, no I am not? Because, this pandemic was just a matter of when it would happen, because those in the virology & immunology field had been warning government leaders that this day was coming and now, so it has. A viral pandemic has been a topic of discussion at Davos & Oxfam for several years but fell on deaf ears.

We all share in the responsibility for this critical failure, those in leadership and the rest of us for not demanding our leadership hold our health & welfare above capitalistic markets & tendencies. Sadly, many countries are just in the beginning stage of this pandemic, like the USA.
Right now, in a few countries (Iran & Italy) hospitals are being critically inundated with ill patients, some hospitals on the verge of critical failure. All this information is readily available, just watch news from all over the world. All because steps of mitigating the virus was not a top priority as WHO had warned.

If you are elderly, over the age of 60 with chronic health condition(s), get a plan together. If your parents, grandparents, relatives, friends or neighbors fall in this category have an emergency plan in place or assist in seeing that a plan is put into place for individual who need help.

Those over the age of 60 with compromised immune disorders are the most vulnerable demographic and have the highest mortality rate inre: Covid-19.

Number 1 Be Prepared

Questions to ask:
  • Do elderly individuals have their prescriptions up to date & filled?
  • Do they have enough food & water? Or have the availability to have food brought to them, should they run low?
  • Is anyone available to care for elderly persons in your family, neighbors and or friends should they become very ill?
  • Do they have access to communication to others in the case of social distancing, social distancing is a must for individuals that fall in this chronic health category?
  • Does their health care plan offer tele-medical services should they come down with symptoms?
  • Are these individuals around super spreaders which in this case are children?
  • Do they have readily available important government resources so they can keep up to date with the progress of Covid-19?
  • Have available important websites & phone numbers for updated information.
  • Useful information to keep handy: your health care provider contact information, CDC.gov/Covid19, your local and state health department. Read about your states plan about addressing those individuals experiencing Covid-19 symptoms and what procedures have been put into place to address those medical needs. Who to call should virus symptoms arise and where to go to seek treatment and testing?
  • Should individuals not have health care coverage, ask your local health department what procedures have been put in place for those persons without medical insurance.

If you have serious symptoms call 911.

Number 2 follow Number 1 instructions and read the above.

This is a time for all of us to come together and be compassionate and patient, it is stressful for everyone and many will die and many more will become ill and that is just a fact.

Do I have Covid-19? Unsure, just had surgery several weeks ago, so my immunity was probably ripe for a cold or normal flu, add to that I am 54 years old, but to be on the safe side I have self-isolated and should my symptoms become worse I will seek medical advice. I would not want to be responsible for infecting anyone else.
